Symbol of the Swiss confederation, the Matterhorn (4478M) competes with Alpamayo (Andes) and Ama Dablam (Himalayas) for the title of the most beautiful mountain in the world.
The ascent to the Matterhorn is long (1200 meters from the Hörnli refuge), physical and the altitude amplifies these difficulties. To succeed, excellent physical condition is essential. It is therefore essential to practice climbing very regularly, to have already made several rock ascents in mountaineering shoes and to master the basic techniques of cramponing.
During this week we will see how:
- Evolve in a tight rope;
- Ensure a second and a first of chordée;
- Carry out a call back safely;
- Place effective protections in the lengths (ice pins, wedges, pegs, etc.);
- Create reliable relays.

Departure for Saas Almagell (1660m). Ascent to the Almagellerhütte hut (2894m)
See you in Saas Grund at 9 am. Possibility to do a climbing school above the refuge. Positive altitude difference 1250 meters. Dinner and overnight at the shelter.
Rocky ascent of Dri Horlini (3209m). In front of the hut, rock climb from the SW ridge of Dri Horlini to 3209m D+: 400 m D-: 400m
Nice outing on a good rock, with a thorough review of the reminders. Rating: AD with passages of 3. Descent back to the Almagellerhütte Duration: 5 to 6 hours
Ascension of Weissmies (4023m) and descent to Saas Grund D+: 1120 m D-: 925 m
With the ascent of Weissmies (4023m) via its SSE ridge, we will do a beautiful high mountain race, with 2 rock passages, then a beautiful snow ridge to reach the summit. Duration: 7h to 8h
Ascent to the Hornli Hut (3260m)
Descent into the valley to meet the other guide. Then take the cable car from Zermatt to Schwarzee (2583m). Walk up to the Hornli hut (3260m). Positive altitude difference of 700m. Dinner and overnight at the shelter.
Ascension of the Matterhorn (4478m) via the Hörnli ridge
For this last day, departure very early for the ascent of the Matterhorn. Pretty easy progression to the Solvay Cabin (4000m) and L'Epaule. Then above, the route is equipped with spindles and ropes to make it easier for us to climb the Matterhorn summit. Go back down to the Hornli Hut. Positive altitude difference of 1200m. Descent back to Zermatt on foot and by cable car. Arrival in Zermat. End of the internship.Duration: 11 à 12 h
